Wireless Jargon / Glossary

Wireless networks, like many things in life - and especially those who have nothing to do with computers - full of jargon. Hi-tech baffles many talk not intimidated, even though his own: here to run a short computer speaks English, to help you.

802.11. The name of the wireless networking standard, defined by the IEEE. Ensures that wireless devices are interoperable.

Driver. A piece of software that tells the computer howtalk to devices that are connected to them. In wireless networks, the driver you are installing will have to buy a CD with any outfit.

Ethernet. The most common type of LAN connection. All the cables you need your computer could be together now Ethernet cable and the cable modem to the computer is likely to be an Ethernet cable.

GHz. GHz. A measure of frequency - one gigahertz is a billion cycles per second. You canrecognize the measurement of the speed of computer processor, which now measured in gigahertz.

IEEE. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Responsible for the wireless networking standard, as well as many other standard computer (including the Ethernet standard). They ensure that computerized systems can work together from different manufacturers.

Interoperable. It means that two devices are compatible - they can be together, becauseare the rules. Should not all wireless devices that is not interoperable.

LAN. Local Area Network. A network is generally limited to a building, like a home or office. A wireless LAN is also known as Wi-Fi.

Linux. Alternatively, the Windows operating system. Computers running Linux can run many programs and Internet connection, without Windows. Linux can be downloaded free of charge and you need to give to friends to use. AMany wireless devices running on Linux, or compatible with it.

MAN. Metropolitan Area Network. A network that covers a larger area, like a city or municipality. Wireless MAN (men?) Internet access is widespread throughout the region, but they are expensive in the structure. They are sometimes used in universities.

Mbps Megabits per second, a measure of connection speed. Not to be confused with MBps megabytes per second to be confused. There are eight megabits in a megabyte.

PAN.Personal Area Network. These networks of devices together in a small area are connected. For example, the computer is connected to heat with a USB keyboard and mouse with a frying pan. PAN wirelessly, using a technology called Bluetooth.

PCI. Peripheral Component Interconnect. This is a way to install new devices inside the computer, such as graphics cards and network devices. If you want to install a wireless card in your computer, you will be withPCI.

PCMCIA. Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (some say it should stand for "people can not save the computer industry acronyms"). A standard for connecting devices the size of the card credit in a laptop to provide additional functions. 'S PCMCIA is a great opportunity to add wireless to a laptop as easy as inserting a disc.

USB. Universal Serial Bus. A port for connecting all types of devices to a computer, such as keyboards, mice, printers, used external drives, and almost everything you can imagine. If you do not want to open your computer and you do not have a laptop, you can use a USB wireless device.

WAN. Wide area network. A network that is connected to more than a physical place, as a company that his computer is connected to a network in both countries. Internet, for example, a WAN - the largest WAN in the world.

WEP. Wired Equivalent Privacy. The old standard for encryption> Wireless networks. Unfortunately, in 2001 proved to be safe, and so should no longer be used.

EPA. Wi-Fi Protected Access. Basically an upgrade of WEP is to solve its security problems. WPA-encrypted networks often change their method of encryption, so as not vulnerable, and even shut down for 30 seconds if they detect a suspected attack.
